Maryland author heads to Big Easy for Black History Month

NEW ORLEANS — Baltimore author and women’s empowerment advocate Michelle Rhoney will be one of 14 featured authors at the 10th Annual Black History Month Literary Weekend, taking place Feb. 19–21 in New Orleans.
Rhoney is the author of The Color of Pretty and The Color of Pieces, a compelling autobio-graphical fictional story centered on healing, self-worth, grief, and transformation. Her stories follow “Lola,” a character Rhoney describes as her “alter ego,” and explore themes like colorism, confidence, faith, resilience, and reclaiming identity after life changes.
“Writing helped me tell my story in a way that could help someone else stand up again,” Rhoney shared during a past appearance on the Horizons Author Lounge podcast. “Even when life falls apart—piece by piece—you can rebuild.”
A longtime human resources leader, Rhoney is the founder and visionary behind the Confidence Looks Good on You Conference, a transformative empowerment experience that uplifts women through purpose, faith, connection, and practical growth tools. Her featured appearance at the Black History Month Literary Weekend will include opportunities for readers to connect with her work. Events include a free writers’ workshop, multiple booksignings, a comedy night, and the Ivory and Cream Affair Literary Jazz Brunch.
BHMLW is a weekend of music, comedy, and books, solely focused on fostering literacy while celebrating African-American authors and businesses. Since its inception in New Orleans in 2017, the event has promoted more than 100 authors, impacted thousands of students, and contributed more than $6,000 in scholarships, awards, and book donations. The annual weekend will return to New Orleans for the first time since 2020.
