NOLA native author returns home for Black History Month

NEW ORLEANS — Beloved children’s author, publisher, and New Orleans native Michelle Knight is returning home as one of 14 featured authors in the 10th Annual Black History Month Literary Weekend, Feb. 19-21, marking her fifth consecutive year participating in the signature celebration of literacy and culture.
“Once we leave, we’re family,” Knight shared on Horizons Author Lounge, describing BHMLW as a tradition that has grown into a true reunion, where returning and new authors are welcomed like kin.
This year, Knight will promote her latest title, Cooking with Serenity: Gumbo’s on the Menu, a lively and culturally rich children’s book celebrating New Orleans food, family, and tradition. Her other titles include God Don’t Make Junk, Maya’s Exciting Day at the African American Inventors Museum, The Friendship Tree, and Shhh...Don’t Tell.
As the CEO of Black Mom’s Reality Bookcase, Knight creates children’s books centered on what she calls “teachable moments,” stories that help children navigate real-life topics like identity, friendships, boundaries, self-worth, and loving Black history. She is known for tackling complex topics in age-appropriate ways, empowering parents and caregivers to have the conversations that matter.
The Black History Month Literary Weekend, hosted by Meet the World Image Solutions, is a weekend of music, comedy, and books, solely focused on fostering literacy while celebrating African-American authors and businesses. Since its inception in New Orleans in 2017, the event has promoted more than 100 authors, impacted thousands of students, and contributed more than $6,000 in scholarships, awards, and book donations.
