Renowned surgeon comes to Big Easy for Black History Month

NEW ORLEANS — Dr. Emily Woolcock, a trailblazing orthopaedic surgeon, author, Tedx speaker, and youth mentor, will travel to New Orleans as one of 14 featured authors in the 10th Annual Black History Month Literary Weekend, Feb. 19-21.
Known for championing early inspiration and representation, Dr. Woolcock will bring her empowering children’s book series, My Doctor Looks Like Me, as part of her mission to “plant small seeds to inspire change.” Her work centers on children of color and introduces them to possibilities they may not see in their everyday lives. Her “Looks Like Me” book series is designed to help children envision themselves in professional spaces—especially careers where representation remains limited.
“The whole purpose is to plant small seeds to inspire big change,” Dr. Woolcock said.
During the weekend’s author events, Dr. Woolcock will showcase her My Doctor Looks Like Me titles as well as interactive learning tools created to deepen engagement. One of her most popular offerings is the Looks Like Me Book Gift Set, described as an “ultimate little doctor’s kit” that includes a book, a working stethoscope, a white coat, and a teddy bear “patient,” encouraging imagination, role-play, and confidence.
The Black History Month Literary Weekend, hosted by Meet the World Image Solutions, is a weekend of music, comedy, and books, solely focused on fostering literacy while celebrating African-American authors and businesses. Since its inception in New Orleans in 2017, the event has promoted more than 100 authors, impacted thousands of students, and contributed more than $6,000 in scholarships, awards, and book donations.
