Thurgood Marshall Academy Students Release Anthology

 WASHINGTON—Nine junior and senior students at Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter High School came together to create Chaotic Harmony, a collection of short stories, essays and poetry.

The purpose of Chaotic Harmony was to provide an outlet for the students to express themselves while instilling a sense of entrepreneurship and artistry. For many of the students, the book would be their first published work.

"These student artists are phenomenal, and I couldn't be prouder of their dedication," said TJ Hendrix, anthology coordinator and a TMA English teacher. "My hope is that this book will help them develop a sense of confidence and awareness."

Hendrix first approached the idea of a student anthology with Malika Mays, TMA Head of School, and Raymond Weeden, TMA Executive Director. Both leaders supported the idea, and Hendrix quickly introduced the concept to the students. She met with them weekly, helping them to craft their work in an honest and poignant way. In the end, nine students, Steven Fairfax, Nevaeh Fleming, Safiya Gaskin, Makayla Howard, Kamarie Jones, Mikayla Lewis, Rahkeam Pickens, Adrianna Pittman and Henry Walker, completed the project, becoming published authors.

“Reading these students' work was a huge treat,” said Dr. Rhonda Lawson, editor and publisher for Chaotic Harmony. “This was a true student-led project, from the cover design to the art and text. Their unique voices and ideas will make you think. I am honored and excited to have helped these young scholars bring their thoughts to life.”

Chaotic Harmony was published by Meet the World Image Solutions, a literary and publicity services company with an emphasis on promoting literacy in underserved neighborhoods.
